Met Gala 2021

By Max Gor

It is known that the most important event in September, let alone in autumn, after 1-year suspension, The Met Gala night which is traditionally held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and attracts all the A-list Designers of the fashion industry. The official dress code for this year was American Independence.

Truthfully speaking, unlike the year before, this season some participants failed to comply with the dress code and most of the guests visited the event sticking to classic silhouettes, dressed in black dinner jackets and remarkable floor-length dresses. Perhaps this is how the celebrity guests understood America’s modern independence.

But among the celebrities who confused the Oscar red carpet with a fantasy fashion event, there were also unforgettable visitors who seriously approached the suit selection process and, together with the designers, they unleashed their creativity.

For example, the suits of top model Iman from Harris Reed, Serena Williams in Gucci and Storm Reid in Prada reminded us of birds of paradise from the exotic Maluku Islands or the east coast of Australia. Certainly the dress code failed to match the designated theme and America in general, but it looked impressive.

Debbie Harry in Zac Posen, Megan Rapino in Sergio Hudson, whose dresses imitated the American flag in colors, Lord in Bode and Emily Blunt in the image of the Statue of Liberty were some of the few who managed to cope with the theme of the night event. And even in the said case all this was just a light resemblance of the dress code.

Separately those people who chose Balenciaga looks that night should be noted. And yes, the Met Gala queen herself, Rihanna, is among them, whose dresses have become history and have turned into memes. But this time it turned out rather modest, except for Desna Gvasalia. The Balenciaga team also included Kim Kardashian with her face covered (maybe it was another person after all?) and Isabelle Huppert. Among the brands that have frequently appeared on the track was Iris Van Herpen. The dresses from the Dutch Iris Van Herpen where chosen by actress Tessa Thompson, singer Grimes and supermodel Winnie Harlow.

The men at the Met Gala this year split into two camps. The first one is, as I mentioned above, protagonist of the classics, who included of course designer Tom Ford in Tom Ford suit (always in nice fashion, but what else could he wear?!). Another designer, Jeremy Scott showed a fresh and cool view on the men’s night jacket. Timothy Chalamet appeared in the image of the already quite familiar Haider Ackermann and sneakers, while the singer Troye Sivan – in a black dress. Among the originals – representatives of the second camp – the rapper Lil Nas X, who changed three dresses during the evening and all were Versace: from a gold cape to a boilersuit.

The theme of floral prints this year was revealed by the stellar appearances of Anna Wintour in the Oscar de la Renta, Jeremy Scott and beloved Irina Shayk in Moschino, Lisa Love in an trouser suit of an unknown designer, and of course Whoopi Golberg in Valentino Haute Couture, who was one big smiling flower.

My beloved women-chandeliers with many rhinestones, stones and hangings conquered my heart. Missing the theme of course, but beautiful. Among them are Zoe Kravitz in Saint Laurent, Barbie Ferreira, Rita Ora in Prada, Kendall Jenner in Givenchy, Emily Blunt in Messika jewelry.

That’s all, guys! I hope the designers and stars next year will not be so confused when it is time to select dresses for the Met Gala and will show maximum creativity, in order to leave impression on us with their appearance!
